What is PPSA Searches?
Personal Property Security Act (PPSA)
search is a query on Personal Property database, maintained by Provincial Government, to find out lien details of an individual, business, vehicle or other properties. The searches is used to find out if the property is free of debts or any third-party (like banks) ownership rights on it due to loans. It is also used to search for debts against individuals or businesses. Each province has its own version of the PPSA.
Why would a PPSA search be done?
PPSA database contains lien information and debt obligations by individuals or corporation. This information is useful when purchasing or selling a business and vehicles and also to find debts of an individual.
How is the PPSA database maintained and used?
When an individual takes a loan on a vehicle that has either been purchased or leased, the loan details will be sent to the PPSA data system by the lender or bank including the individualโs name, vehicle information, date of birth, loan amount, date of loan and majority date. This information will be listed under the VIN number of the vehicle and posted within the PPSA databank. This remains in the database until the loan is discharged. If someone is purchasing a used vehicle, it is important to ensure that there are no liens or loans against the vehicle being purchased. Similarly if a corporation has any loans or liens where they have purchased equipment, consumer goods or vehicles the information will be stored in the PPSA database. This information will be useful to determine the debts of a corporation.
